Uttoxeter Racecourse was established on the old site of Keele Park racecourse. It was largely funded by the local gentry in its early days, with only 100 members.
The course covers 110 acres in the Staffordshire countryside nestled between Stoke and Derby. Its excellent transport links along with its roster of exciting events have copper-fastened its stellar reputation.
In the 1920s, after coming out of the rut of the First World War, the course saw steady growth revolving around four annual meetings in April, May, September, and October.
A requisition by the War Department during the Second World War called off all racing action for the entire wartime period.
The Uttoxeter Racecourse company faced additional woes after the war; It entered a legal dispute with a farmer who owned a four-acre section of the field.
Course Saviours
After some turbulence, the Uttoxeter Urban Council stepped in to save the racecourse. It rode the wave of local dissent to provide funding and help the course reopen. The decision proved popular with the grand reopening of April 12th, 1952 attracting a keen crowd of 12,000.
In 1966 the course came under the scrutiny of the Horserace Betting Levy Board. It was placed on a modernisation list. £167,000 poured in over the following years to provide a sorely-needed makeover.
At this time a local bookmaker by the name of Olive Davis became chairwoman of the racecourse. Over the next decades would she would oversee the transformation of Uttoxeter into a first-class track, complete with a new Paddock Suite.
Facilities received a further boost under the investment of Sir Stanley Clarke CBE in 1988 with two new grandstands and a paddock development.
Uttoxeter Races: Course Layout
Uttoxeter is an oval-shaped left-handed course of one mile, two and a half furlongs, often considered a particularly sharp track. Conditions are known to be challenging particularly throughout the winter months and it is not uncommon for horses to fall here towards the end of races.
Accordingly, the number of flights on the hurdle track in longer races such as the Midlands Grand National, ran over a daunting four miles and two furlongs, has recently been reduced from ten to nine.
Riders often comment on the variability of the track, from the punishing soft going of the winter months to the firm quickness of the summer. Jockey Mick Fitzgerald has remarked that during the summer months the track ‘puts a premium on a horse’s ability to travel on the bridle.’
Front-runners tend to perform well here given the tight twists and turns. The course undulates slightly, with a tricky dog leg to the right of the back straight; It then runs downhill into the generous home straight of four furlongs.
The relatively long and flat straight offers punters exceptional views of the action. This has led to plenty of thrilling photo finishes over the years.
The course is currently under the ownership of Arena Racing Company. The group manages 16 courses amounting to a total of 39% of British flat and jump fixtures.
Races to Watch from Uttoxeter
Uttoxeter has a colourful history of attracting the best talent around. It has played host to pivotal moments in the careers of jockeys who are now household names.
One such moment was the last racing day of the National Hunt term in June 1967. It saw jockey Josh Gifford match Fred Winter’s previous record of 121 winners in a single season. It’s a record that since stands unmatched.
Fifteen years later, John Francombe made history with his 800th overall winner at Uttoxeter; A feat that was somewhat echoed once again in 2002. That year, A.P McCoy rode to victory aboard Mighty Montefalco, marking his record-breaking 1700th pole position finish.
Midlands Grand National
The course has also been the proving ground for many horses over the years, with March’s Midlands Grand National event in particular famed as a fortune-teller of sorts for larger races such as Aintree’s blue riband Grand National chase.
The race is a true test of stamina and victory goes only to the most thorough of stayers who are up to the challenge. Indeed in 1997, Uttoxeter was the birthplace of the famous gelding Lord Gyllene. After narrowly losing the Midlands Grand National to Seven Towers, the horse stormed to a breathtaking 25 length victory at Aintree four weeks later.
By watching the Uttoxeter races live stream, you can be sure to catch the next piece of history in the making. Every race is covered!
Events such as the Summer Cup in early July, the Bet365 Staffordshire Plate Jump Championship, and of course the Midlands Grand National are typically the courses biggest events. The Midlands Grand National is a significant staying prize of £70,000 and is one of the highlights of the UK racing calendar.
